Portugal Golden Visa (Residence by Investment)
Portugal's Golden Visa grants a renewable residence permit to non-EU nationals who make a qualifying investment in Portugal. As per current regulatory changes, after 10 years of legal residency, holders can apply for Portuguese citizenship or permanent residence, without needing to live in Portugal full time.
The real estate investment route closed in 2023. The primary qualifying route in 2026 is a fund investment from EUR 500,000 into a qualifying Portuguese fund that meets program requirements.
Key facts:
- Minimum investment: Qualifying fund investment from EUR 500,000; Cultural donation starting from €250,000
- Physical presence: 7 days in year one, 14 days per subsequent two-year period
- Path to citizenship: After 10 years of legal residency
- Processing time: 12 to 18 months
- Family inclusion: Spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents
- Language: None for residency; A2 level required for citizenship
- Requirements: Health insurance and clean criminal record required
Tax residency is only triggered if you spend more than 183 days per year in Portugal or maintain it as your habitual residence on December 31.
Alternative Residency Pathways
Portugal offers several residency options beyond the Golden Visa, designed for entrepreneurs, retirees, and remote workers seeking a long-term base in Europe.
- The D2 Entrepreneur Visa is for those looking to start or expand a business in Portugal, or to work as a freelancer in Portugal, and requires a comprehensive business plan and proof of sufficient funds.
- The D7 Passive Income Visa is designed for retirees and individuals with stable passive income from outside Portugal, such as pensions, dividends, or rental income, with a minimum income requirement.
- The D8 Digital Nomad Visa is for remote workers and freelancers employed by or serving clients outside Portugal.
Eligibility depends on your income profile, professional status, and personal circumstances. Contact INGWE to assess which pathway applies to your situation.
